The Right Hand of God

Read right-hand language as exaltation, power, victory, and messianic authority within the Bible’s one-throne confession.

What this path establishes

Jesus at God’s right hand describes the glorified Son’s supreme authority and mediatorial position, not a second divine being seated beside God.

PresentDuplicate
  1. 1
    Open with exaltationActs 2:33
Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.

Peter uses right-hand language for Jesus’ exaltation and authority to pour out the Spirit.

Why this passage comes nextEstablish how Scripture already uses God’s right hand.
  2. 2
    Right hand as powerExodus 15:6
Thy right hand, O LORD, is become glorious in power: thy right hand, O LORD, hath dashed in pieces the enemy.

God’s right hand shatters enemies. The phrase is plainly an image of divine power.

  3. 3
Right hand as creative actionIsaiah 48:13
Mine hand also hath laid the foundation of the earth, and my right hand hath spanned the heavens: when I call unto them, they stand up together.

God’s right hand spans the heavens, confirming symbolic power language rather than anatomy.

  4. 4
    The royal seatPsalm 110:1
A Psalm of David. The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.

The Messiah receives the place of favor and rule until enemies are subdued.

  5. 5
Power and the Son of manMark 14:62
And Jesus said, I am: and ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.

Jesus interprets the image as sitting at the right hand of Power and coming as Daniel’s Son of man.

  6. 6
    Resurrection and installationActs 2:32-36
32 This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses. 33 Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear. 34 For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, 35 Until I make thy foes thy footstool. 36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.

Peter applies Psalm 110 to the raised and exalted Messiah made manifest as Lord and Christ.

  7. 7
    Stephen’s visionActs 7:55-56
55 But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God, 56 And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.

Stephen sees God’s glory and Jesus vindicated as the Son of man in the place of authority.

  8. 8
    Above every powerEphesians 1:20-23
20 Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, 21 Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come: 22 And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, 23 Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.

Paul defines the right-hand position as supremacy over every principality, power, name, and age.

  9. 9
    One throneRevelation 4:2
And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne.

John’s heavenly throne vision begins with one throne and One seated on it.

  10. 10
One throne, face, and nameRevelation 22:1-4
1 And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb. 2 In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. 3 And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him: 4 And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads.

The final vision has the throne of God and the Lamb, yet servants serve Him, see His face, and bear His name.

The case in one statement

Right-hand language answers ‘what authority does the risen Messiah possess?’ It does not answer ‘how many divine beings sit in heaven?’
