The Name of Jesus
Lesson 1 of 4Level 1: Plain Foundations44 minutes

Name, Presence, and Identity

In Scripture, a name can reveal character, covenant presence, authority, reputation, and personal identity.

Lesson thesisGod’s name is not a magic sound; it is His revealed identity and authoritative presence among His people.
Plain-language pass

Start with the main point: In Scripture, a name can reveal character, covenant presence, authority, reputation, and personal identity.

  • Name what the passage says before explaining what it means.
  • Use one clear Scripture before stacking several references.
  • Answer the checkpoint in plain words first.
01

A name reveals the one who bears it

Biblical names often communicate character, mission, or covenant relation. To act in someone’s name is to act under that person’s authority and representation.

God places His name where He makes His covenant presence known. To profane His name is to misrepresent His identity; to call on His name is to appeal to Him.

02

The name is not a verbal charm

Syllables do not manipulate God. The sons of Sceva demonstrate that merely repeating Jesus’ name without faith, relation, and authority is not biblical invocation.

The saving name matters because of the person and work it reveals, not because pronunciation functions as magic.

03

Revelation of the name advances

God reveals Himself covenantally as the I AM and the LORD. The prophets promise a day when His people will know His name.

The New Testament presents Jesus as the name in which salvation, remission, worship, prayer, and mission are centered.

  • Jesus declares and makes known the Father’s name.
Key terms
Invocation
Calling upon or naming the Lord in faith, worship, prayer, or covenant action.
Covenant name
God’s revealed name by which His people know His identity, presence, and commitments.
Common misunderstandingEmphasizing Jesus’ name means treating the word Jesus as a magic formula.

Biblical name-language concerns the revealed person, authority, and saving work. Invocation is covenantal, not superstitious.
