Reading Scripture
Lesson 4 of 4Level 1: Plain Foundations50 minutes

Building Doctrine from the Whole Counsel

Strong doctrine explains the full range of biblical evidence instead of winning with one favored verse.

Lesson thesisA faithful doctrine must affirm every clear biblical claim, distinguish the questions each text answers, and synthesize them without contradiction.
Plain-language pass

Start with the main point: Strong doctrine explains the full range of biblical evidence instead of winning with one favored verse.

  • Name what the passage says before explaining what it means.
  • Use one clear Scripture before stacking several references.
  • Answer the checkpoint in plain words first.
01

Collect before you conclude

Begin by gathering direct statements, narratives, prophetic background, apostolic explanations, and objection texts. Rank them by clarity and relevance. Do not allow a difficult image to overturn many explicit declarations.

For Christology, collect texts declaring one God, the Word as God, the Word made flesh, God manifested in flesh, the Father dwelling in Christ, the full Godhead dwelling bodily, and the genuine human life of the Son.

02

Distinguish without dividing

The Bible distinguishes God as eternal Spirit from the flesh He assumed. It distinguishes the Father who dwells and works from the Son who prays, obeys, suffers, and mediates. Those distinctions are real.

The same Bible identifies Jesus as God revealed, the visible image, Lord, Savior, and the bearer of divine fullness. Synthesis refuses both errors: dissolving Christ’s humanity and dividing God into separate divine beings.

03

State the result carefully

Good doctrinal language should be testable against Scripture. Say that the one God was manifested in genuine humanity, that the Son is the real human life begotten in the incarnation, and that the Father dwells and works in the Son.

Avoid slogans that create problems the Bible does not create. The goal is not a clever sentence. The goal is a statement that keeps every major biblical witness speaking.

Scripture lab

Construct a cumulative case

Assign each passage to one category: divine identity, incarnation, indwelling revelation, divine fullness, or genuine humanity. Then write one paragraph that affirms every category.

Watch for
  • No single category is allowed to erase another.
  • The texts join full deity with genuine humanity.
  • The Father-Son distinction is explained through incarnation and indwelling, not separate Gods.
Key terms
Synthesis
A statement that brings the Bible’s related claims together without denying any of them.
Proof-texting
Using a verse apart from its context or the wider biblical witness to support a conclusion it does not establish.
Common misunderstandingIf one verse proves my point, other passages do not matter.

A biblical doctrine must explain all relevant evidence. A conclusion that survives only by silencing other texts is weak.

Reflection and teaching note

Write a two-sentence statement about Jesus that affirms both full deity and genuine humanity without using three-person language.
