Lesson 4 of 4Level 1: Plain Foundations62 minutes

Prayer, Limited Knowledge, and the Right Hand

Difficult Father-Son texts become coherent when the Son’s genuine humanity, mediatorial office, and exaltation are allowed to remain real.

Lesson thesisJesus’ prayers, human limitations, and exalted position distinguish incarnate humanity from eternal deity without creating separate Gods.
Plain-language pass

Start with the main point: Difficult Father-Son texts become coherent when the Son’s genuine humanity, mediatorial office, and exaltation are allowed to remain real.

  • Name what the passage says before explaining what it means.
  • Use one clear Scripture before stacking several references.
  • Answer the checkpoint in plain words first.
01

The Son prays as genuine man

Prayer is not theater. Jesus possesses a real human will, lives in dependence upon God, obeys under suffering, and mediates for humanity.

Saying ‘Jesus prayed to Himself’ collapses the incarnation. The man Christ Jesus addresses God who transcends the incarnation and also dwells in Him.

02

Human limitation belongs to the incarnate condition

Jesus grows in wisdom, can speak from limited human knowledge, and says the Father is greater while He is in humbled mission. Philippians describes self-emptying through servant form and obedience.

These statements do not deny the eternal divine identity revealed in Christ. They tell us the humanity is real rather than omniscience pretending to learn.

03

The right hand is royal and relational language

Old Testament right-hand imagery describes God’s power, victory, favor, and action. The exalted Son of man receives messianic authority and appears in visions in relation to divine glory.

The image should not be converted into two divine bodies on two eternal thrones. Revelation’s final vision speaks of one throne, one face, and one name while retaining God-and-Lamb imagery.

Scripture lab

Classify the difficult texts

Classify each text as prayer, human limitation, obedience, mediation, exaltation, or final divine rule. Explain what question each answers.

Watch for
  • Prayer and obedience belong to genuine humanity.
  • Right-hand language announces exaltation and authority.
  • Distinction in vision does not multiply the number of Gods.
Key terms
Mediatorial office
The role of the man Christ Jesus as representative, priest, sacrifice, and exalted Lord for humanity.
Exaltation
God’s public vindication and enthronement of the risen Messiah in supreme authority.
Common misunderstandingOneness means Jesus was praying to Himself.

The incarnate Son genuinely prays to God. The distinction is between real human life and the eternal God, not between two Gods.

Reflection and teaching note

Prepare a sixty-second answer to ‘Who was Jesus praying to?’ that begins with agreement about His real humanity.
